Promoting tradition, culture and new generations of Chinese zither educators and enthusiasts!

  • Cameron Yeong Jang

Cameron Yeong Jang began studying the guzheng under the instruction of Ms. Wong in 2012. Although she had dreamed of learning the guzheng since she was a little girl, opportunities at the time led her instead to join the Laney College Great Wall Youth Orchestra, where she first explored Chinese instrumental music. In high school, Cameron was finally able to pursue her passion for the guzheng, and it has since become a deeply meaningful and enduring part of her life.

As a Chinese adoptee, Cameron has found studying the guzheng to be an especially enriching experience—strengthening her musical and technical abilities, and also allowing her to connect more profoundly with her cultural heritage. Under Ms. Wong’s guidance, she has developed a deep appreciation for the artistry, stories, and history behind traditional Chinese music, gaining insight into how each piece reflects the spirit of different regions of China.

During college, Cameron expanded her musical journey by becoming one of Ms. Wong’s Teaching Assistants, working with students of various ages in both private and group lesson settings. Teaching was challenging, but she found great fulfillment in helping students build confidence, express creativity, and discover joy through guzheng. In recent years, after completing graduate school, Cameron has continued to support the Youth Ensemble during summer intensive workshops, substitute teach Ms. Wong’s San Francisco students, and begin mentoring her own students.

Cameron looks forward to continuing to grow as both a performer and an educator, encouraging students’ growth while sharing the beauty and tradition of Chinese music with the San Francisco Bay Area communities.

Some notable venues and stages where she has performed include - Herbst Theatre, Oracle Park, De Young Museum, University of California Berkeley, Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco, San Jose Center for Performing Arts,  Sister Caroline Collins, D.C Theater, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Pacific Renaissance Plaza, San Jose State University, The St. Regis San Francisco, Chinese Performing Arts of America (CPAA) Arts Center, Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association, View Boston, and Fenway Park!  Through the use of different tones on the guzheng, as well as expressive dynamics, she takes her listeners on a story through history and culture.

In 2021, Ms. Kim moved to Boston, MA and found herself turning to music as a therapeutic outlet of expression!  She wanted to share her expertise and love for guzheng with the new community around her and decided to start Wongderful Tunes Studio in 2024!  Through music and performing arts, she has the opportunity to share a piece of her Chinese background and heritage with others.  Although miles away, her love for collaboration motivated her to continue to be a part of CSME and she is excited to teach/share her knowledge and passion for guzheng with the Greater Boston Community!
